A foundling raised in a world of humans
Growing up, orphaned Josephine didn’t know who or what she was—just that she was “bad,” an outcast with strange powers. Protecting her baby brother Thaddeus became her entire life. The day he was taken away began Jo’s transition from angry girl…to would-be superhero…to enchanting villain.
A lethally sensual enforcer on a mission
Whether by bow or in bed, archer Rune the Baneblood never fails to eliminate his target. In his sights: the oldest living Valkyrie. Yet before he can strike, he encounters a vampiric creature whose beauty mesmerizes him. With one bite, she pierces him with aching pleasure, stealing his forbidden blood—and jeopardizing the secrets of his brethren.
A boundless passion that will lead to sweet ruin…
Could this exquisite female be a spy sent by the very Valkyrie he hunts? Rune knows he must not trust Josephine, yet he’s unable to turn her away. When Jo betrays the identity of the one man she will die to protect, she and Rune become locked in a treacherous battle of wills that pits ultimate loyalty against unbridled lust.
REVIEW: Kresley Cole did it again, she wrote a story that brought the IAD series to a whole new level of awesome. It isn’t fair that I simply state how awesome the series is getting. It is important to note that everything about Sweet Ruin was fantastic.
Sweet Ruin is book # 16 in the Immortal After Dark series and one that has put the series in a whole new level. If you have been following the series, you already know that Cole manages to bring fantastic characters to life, her stories of love, sacrifice and redemption are heartfelt, swoon worthy and beautifully developed. Sweet Ruin doesn’t fall far from that trend, it has all one has come to expect from Cole’s amazing stories. Sweet Ruin is the story of Rune & Josephine (Jo), both of these characters have had their share of terrifying circumstances that each has had to endure.
From book one we have been learning about the Ascension and how this event impacts the Lore as a whole, it is the time when war between different creatures of the Lore come to be, it is also a time when mates are found and new species are created/born. So far we have met a number of characters and their stories have made our hearts burst with excitement through their quests and adventures. However, Sweet Ruin brings new doubts, twists and turns that had me doubting everything I believed I knew about the stories I have read and the characters I have come to love. Nix, is spectacular and her interaction with these characters is twisted and enigmatic, her character gives the story a certain level of secrecy and mystery that seems characteristic of her.
Nix is part of everyone’s future and she plays her cards very well. Jo’s little brother Thaddie is all Jo has, her love for her brother is what pushed her into survival mode forcing her to steal, and lie in order to survive. But when destiny has other plans for her she finds herself against the wrong people and gets killed. Josephine (Jo) then finds herself coming back from the death as a monster, a monster she only thought existed in nightmares. She has strength and powers she never could’ve imagined, she becomes her own superhero but as she grows more powerful so does her thirst for blood.
Jo is one of those characters you love from the very instant you meet her, she is strong and determined, stubborn and giving, she is all I have come to expect from Cole’s characters. After her death, Jo is separated from her brother. She understands that by allowing the separation, she is giving her brother the chance to live a life she wouldn’t be able to give him, even if their separation breaks her heart and soul. I enjoyed Jo’s story very much, her circumstances taught her at a young age to not trust and to survive at all cost. While in her transition from a child to an adult, Jo experienced the need of connection, her life without Thaddie had left a hole in her heart and a deep need to connect with someone like her. Her total bad-ass attitude is perhaps one of the best things about her character, from the way in which she takes charge when fighting to the way in which she handles her emotions. Her abilities only add to her character, her personality as well as her ingenuity are traits we do not find often in paranormal characters.
Jo uniqueness is simply fascinating, her character’ origins is new to the theme in which the series has been going and it adds an exciting stance to the fascinating back drop story of the Ascension. Cole manages to combine paranormal aspects and fantasy in a way that is both simple and fascinating.
Rune is a bad-ass, sexy, insatiable and extremely dangerous alpha male. He extracts information, when he needs it and how he needs it, his methods though unconventional have proven efficient. His sensuality is only measured by amount of women he has bedded and his charm as well as his smarts aren’t necessarily what women want. Rune is one of those characters one wish we could read more about, he makes the story even more enjoyable with his charming yet irreverent attitude and shameless sexual advances & innuendos. Cole gave us a hero that not only charms women with his wit but also with his insatiable sexual desires. Rune is dangerous, he is part of the Moriør, an alliance of otherworldly that is rumored to be the exterminator of worlds and entire civilizations. While some of it may be true, not all rumors carry the whole truth.
I was swoon off my feet by Rune, he is irreverent, sexy, sexual and extremely dangerous. He is the archer of the Moriør and someone who has maintained a reputation throughout the lore, his mission is all he focuses on, not because it comes from Orion the man who saved his lie, but because he was the man who gave him purpose. He drags a vengeance centuries old and he will not stop until he finds the last of the lineage of the woman who killed his mother. While Rune has more than one goal, he also has a mission he must complete. What is not part of his mission and long term goals is finding his mate.
When Jo and Rune meet their meeting is one that brings both, laughter and sensuality and one can’t help but fall in-love with their banter right away. These two characters have so much in common, their pain and suffering as well as their passion and need for love and connection. Their interaction is fun, fresh, sexy and explosive. Their story develops slowly but with a certain spark that keeps readers glue to the pages. Sweet Ruin is fun, exciting, filled with passion, sensuality and sexual tension. The new characters introduced in the book only add the excitement of what is to come from the series, Orion & Nix may have history and I can’t wait to see where it all leads. The story leave many questions unanswered but at the same time it also answers many questions that were brought out by previous books in the series.
Do not wait to read Sweet Ruin, it is a story that will keep you awake at night until the very last page.
Do I recommend this book? Hell yeah I do!
