Book description: Allie Beckstrom knows that there’s a price to pay for using magic.  She’s suffered her fair share of migraines, and gaps in her memory during her time working as a Hound, tracing spells back to their casters. But now Allie’s been visibly marked by magic with a mysterious iridescent tattoo. She’s not only lost all memory of how she got it, but also of the man that she’s supposedly fallen in love with. Oh, and as usual, she’s completely broke.  So when the criminal magic enforcement division of the police asks her to consult on a missing person’s case, things start to look up. At first, it seems to be a fairly straightforward way of earning some money – but like most things in Allie’s life it soon turns into a dangerous mix of underworld criminals, ghosts and blood magic. This time Allie is going to discover it takes more than magic to survive…

Review by Vicky: This is the second instalment to the Allie Beckstrom series but the first that I have read and it works well as a standalone as well as I would imagine it does as part of the series. I enjoyed it that much that I’ve already bought the first book.

Allie is a Hound who is able to scent out a spell and follow it back to the caster. The only problem is that when magic is used a price has to be paid. Allie is confused about a lot in her life as her magic usage has caused large holes in her memory and even put her in a coma. When she is recruited to work with MERC, a secret magical enforcement division of the police, she is trying to piece her life together after her father’s death, the appearance of the magical tattoos and the increase in her abilities but also figure out who she can trust while she is facing threats from different directions and working a case that the police are playing very close to their chest.

Allie is a fantastic, individual character who has a stubborn streak but is trying to accept the people that are coming in to her life for what they could be rather than instantly distancing herself from everyone. She pushes herself to her limits and sometimes past them with no thought for her own safety. I really liked Allie’s character and I am looking forward to both reading the first book to establish a bit of background and the future books to find out more about her.

Allies relationship with Zayvion doesn’t feature too heavily in the story but had the right balance to keep this in the fantasy genre rather that moving in to a paranormal romance realm. They are apparently dating but even though Allies body remembers him, her mind doesn’t.

Zayvion is a dark, mysterious and intriguing character who obviously has genuine feelings for Allie and wants to protect her.  He is a lot more powerful that he has let on and I think this might become more apparent as the series continues.

I really enjoyed Magic in the Blood and am already looking forward to reading the other books in the series. This is an excellently written fantasy which is fast paced when it needs to be and detailed enough so you can understand all the intricacies of what is happening in the magical world.

Great read and for that I give it a 4 ½ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ (hearts)
