A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman’s self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I’m twenty-three years old and I’m known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing—the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I’m not completely reckless. I’m safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone’s girlfriend. I’m convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I’d go to in order to keep it that way.

RD: Welcome. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?

RW: Thanks for having me! Sure. I’m from Orlando, FL and I live with my husband and 5 fur babies (1 dog and 4 cats). I’m a huge movie buff, an avid Brandi Carlile fan, and I love all things Tim Burton.

RD: How did you get the idea for The Replacement?

RW: I don’t remember exactly what spawned the idea, I just remember wanting to challenge myself. I wanted to write something raw and gritty and different from my other projects. Elise’s character popped into my head and I immediately wrote a summary, which ended up inspiring the story.

RD: Who was your favorite character to write in The Replacement and which was the most difficult to write about?

RW: My favorite was a toss up between Christian and Ryder. I loved writing Christian because he was intense and sexy, but I also loved writing Ryder because his character reminded me of my husband in some ways (and my hubby really is my dream guy). I loved that he was a free spirit and was willing to take a chance on
Elise. My least favorite was Tim because…well, he’s just a jerk. I also had a hard time writing Elise because much of her journey hit way too close to home, but I wouldn’t say I disliked writing her. She just exhausted me emotionally.

RD: if The Replacement had a theme song what would it be?TheReplacement2

RW: Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey. It inspired the book.

RD: What is your writing ritual (quiet place or music as a background?

RW: I always need music while I’m visualizing scenes or working on an outline or the story board. It’s rare that I listen to music while I’m actually writing, but it does happen sometimes. I like a quiet place near a window, with absolutely no distractions.
