Denise Sullivan knew she should not have come here tonight, but the buzz about this club was too much to pass up. She could not remember the last time she’d had a date, and she didn’t want to spend another Saturday night alone. She wanted to experience the club and get out of the rut she was in. The fact that she was standing alone, swaying to the music, barely able to afford a drink or two was proof she should have stayed home. She had tried to get her best friend Amie to come along for the night, telling her the stories she’d heard of the place – the décor, the music, the drinks, and all the beautiful people – but Amie refused to go to such a “pretentious pile of crap,” as she so elegantly put it. Denise continued to look around, and had to agree the place had that feel, but it was so worth it, if only to experience it for one night.
Wow, such beautiful people, Denise thought glancing around.
A deep baritone voice – that shot through her entire body and curled her toes – whispered in her ear. “Hello, are you alone?”
Denise looked over her shoulder and found herself staring into the face of a modern-day Adonis. He had jet-black, wavy hair that brushed against his collar. The strong cut of his chin accentuated the curves of his sensuous lips, but it was his eyes that drew her in – dark, fathomless eyes that penetrated into her soul, capturing her completely. He was the most beautiful man she’d ever seen. When she tried to answer him, her voice nearly failed her.
She turned to face him. “Uh…hi.”
Nic knew before she spoke that she was his for the taking. The flush of her cheeks and the glow she radiated signaled that she was interested and probably willing to do whatever he asked. He leaned toward her and spoke in a tantalizing whisper. “I’m Nic. I saw you from across the floor, dancing alone. You’ve got no partner tonight?”
She looked up at him with large, doe eyes and shook her head.
“Such a waste of a beautiful woman,” he continued. Sensuality and warmth exuded from him as he stepped closer to her. “I can’t believe the hounds in this place haven’t been bothering you all night. I recognize true beauty when I see it, and I see it standing before me. Would you care to dance?” Nic extended his hand and flashed his brilliant smile to seal the deal.
She hesitated only a moment before she took his hand. Her breath quickened and the vein in her neck pulsated in time with her wildly beating heart as he led her to the dance floor. As if on cue, the music switched up, a slower melody blasted out from the speakers, and he pulled her in close. Their bodies melded together, touching from head to hip, and he held her tight, undulating with her to the rhythm of the music like a snake charmer hypnotizing his snake.
“You’re so very pretty,” he said. His reached up and his fingertips softly caressed her face.
Intense desire radiated from Nic as he held her tighter. The poor girl couldn’t pull away if she wanted to.
“Um… thank… you. I love this song, don’t you?” Denise asked. She took a step back trying to put space between their bodies, but Nic’s grip around her waist kept them glued together.
Nic nodded and slowly maneuvered her over to the edge of the dance floor. “It’s so warm in here and you feel hot. Want to get some air?”
Denise was flushed from more than the heat of the strobe lights. The rush of excitement she felt dancing with Nic had nearly overwhelmed her. This was the type of night that she had hoped for, and now she was living her dream of having a gorgeous man sweep her off her feet. Could Nic be her prince charming? She did have a moment’s pause when he asked her to step outside, but she dismissed it, thinking nothing could happen under the bright lights of the club’s front entrance. She let him lead her to a door and, as she stepped outside, she realized they were in the alleyway behind the club, not out in the front. The door shut behind her, but there was a light above it that was bright enough for her to see the immediate area. Besides a dumpster, Nic and her, the alley was empty.
Crap, what the hell is this? she thought.
She was about to turn around, but the cool rush of air that flowed over her hot face was a relief from the stifling club. She breathed in the chilled, night air. Her potential paramour had continued a few steps into the alley when he turned and smiled at her. He looked so handsome and so enticing standing there like a perfect gentleman waiting for her to do something. She leaned back against the club’s wall, watching him through hooded eyes, and made the boldest decision of her young life.
What’s the worst that could happen? Isn’t this exactly what I’ve been waiting for—a chance to kiss Nic.
