Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Lightning, Valen was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai.

Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence. Cursed by Zeus to never know love again, Valen has brought up barriers around his heart to protect it, but with each new barrier he creates, the dark hold his power has over him grows, becoming all he needs.

Until the night he finally crosses paths with the assassin who has been watching him from the shadows, a bewitching mortal possessing the name of an angel and the skills of a devil—a woman who awakens his passionate heart and stirs dangerous desires.

Eva has built a fearsome reputation for herself in Italy’s underworld, but her latest job in her beloved city of Rome has left her feeling that she has stepped into a dangerous world and this mission might end in her death—either at the hands of her mysteriously seductive client or by the blade of the wickedly alluring warrior who is her target.

As the threat from the daemons escalates and more than just the Rome gate becomes their target, will Valen be strong enough to face the fears in his heart and the ghosts of his past to claim everything he desires or will they lure him deeper under their spell and into the darkness?

REVIEW: Felicity Heaton has once again proven to be on top of her game. Valen is the 2nd book in the Guardians Of Hades series. In this installment, Heaton gives us an engrossing and heart-wrenching story of love, understanding, and acceptance.

We met Valen in Ares and it was obvious to the reader that Valen was as intense as he was volatile. Valen is one of the brothers in charge of guarding the gates of Hades, and since the events after Ares attack Valen has felt a presence, following and hunting him.  As he returns to his city, Rome he can’t deny the need and pull that seems to call him every time his stalker follows him. As he roams the streets of Rome he finds himself trying to bait his stalker, forcing whoever it is that keeps following to show themselves or make a mistake. As one of the sons of Hades, Valen has a dark story and one we didn’t know much about until now. Valen carries deep and sorrowful past that does not allow him to accept or believe in love.

As the story develops we learn about Valen’s sister who died in an attack perpetrated by very skillful enemies, but what makes the tragedy worse is that his sister soul is still lost to him and his brothers.  And every attempt to find it has come back empty. While Valen’s fury and destruction cost him dearly, he never for once stop thinking about his beloved sister. His heart and soul feel responsible for not being able to save her, but at the same time, he blames those who were powerful enough to protect her.

I enjoyed how Heaton portrait Valen, a broken hero with a heart of gold. A man who has suffered throughout millennia but one who has gain intelligence and skills through harsh experiences. I found myself liking every bit of this book and the characters. As Valen shows us who he is and how he became to be the man he is we also get to meet his fated female. A woman that is as intelligent and agile as Valen, and while she doesn’t possess the strength of a goddess, her skills can give Valen a run for his money. Eva is intelligent, skillful and flat out a bad ass. As an assassin, she thrives in secrecy and skills, but all the while her heart lives tormented and in chaos.  Her profession as an assassin can be dangerous, deceit and mistrust are part of her world. So when she meets Valen face to face she knows there is more to him than his desire to kill her, her instinct tells her to trust him while her heart tells her to surrender.

I found myself enthralled by these the characters, their connection and their story entwined in such way that their story almost becomes one. They each have suffered loss and deceit by those they trusted but not without paying with their heart. Eva & Valen bring a new level of action to the series, each possesses a set of skills that give them an advantage over their enemies but as their vulnerability gets exposed they have to learn to rely on one another to survive.  The action was entertaining and the attraction between Eva & Valen is explosive.  The way in which these two characters transition from enemies to lovers didn’t go smoothly, they had to overcome more than heartache. I think the author did a fabulous job bringing the action of a demon uprising to this love story, by doing so she managed to give the story an edge without taking away the sensuality or romanticism that we have come to crave from Heaton’s writing.

If you are looking for a hot, sensual and action packed paranormal romance then look no further. Valen has it all.
