You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.
The first lesson is to make yourself strong.
After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.
When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

REVIEW: The Wicked King was one of the most anticipated reads of 2019 and for a good reason. As we return to this wonderful series, we are brought back to the land of faerie. Jude Duarte managed to put Cardan on the throne but there are those who opposed the new king and they will be doing anything possible to remove him.
The Wicked King picks up 5 months after the events of The Cruel King, Cardan has been crowned. He is still as impossible and as insolent as ever but much more dashing and wonderful. Jude has managed to keep Cardan under certain level of control. Any play, any decision and any move comes from Jude but as things start to unravel and other powerful characters come into play it becomes clear that Jude may be in for more than she can handle.
I absolutely loved this book, the way in which the author treat us with these power plays, tricks and twists is absoulutely delicious. The author has managed to capture & maintain the essense of the story, and as it developes and new tricks unralvels we are treated with a first row view into the machinations, the betrayal and manipulations of each of these characters.
As danger gets closer everyday, Jude & Cardan must decide what will their next move is going to be, as they start to encounter betrayal, lies & deceit Jude has a lot to consider. Quick decisions have become the norm for Jude, deciding how much she is willing to share with Cardan has become part of her strategy but at the same time her emotional stability has been put to the test. As these characters each push towards their own personal goals, Jude’s ability to predict her enemies next move blurrs and she finds herself doubting her own ability to maintain an advantage. Does she trust Cardan enough to share the information she has come to know or does she keep it from him regardless of consequences. The beauty of this story is not how hard Jude fights to be part of a world that isn’t hers, but how hard she fights to keep her humanity. The author did a fantastic job showing us how much Jude has changed since arriving in faerie & since she decided to save her young brother.
Jude & Cardan’s relationship is on slow burn. As they start to hint into their attraction they are tested by actions that have hardly been under their control and when Cardan’s brother comes back to claim the throne things start to get very dangerous. The beauty of Jude’s character isn’t that she is strong and decisive, in fact is is the oppositive. Her flaws is what keep her huminity in check, she knows she is changing and everyday she is more and more capable of doing terrible things, but as she is testing her own limits she finds herself finding solace in the fact that she is still human, and in order to survice she has to do what everyone think she is incapable of doing.
Holly Black did a superb job with The Wicked King, we follow again these characters throughout their stories and each time we are given a glimpse into their world. With each action we learn a new side of them, with each decision we learn their intetions and with each play we knows a bit more about their souls. The Wicked King has already earned its place in the best books of 2019.
