Ricki Hamilton and her sister have just inherited a vast estate in the Hollywood hills. Unfortunately, with that legacy comes the most exclusive club in Hollywood history, a secret BDSM establishment where only the rich and the naughty come to play. Ricki wants nothing to do with this business, and is trying to find ways to get out of having to run it . . . until she meets Axel―a sexy enigmatic rock star who makes her want to submit to needs she didn't know she had.
REVIEW: I became a fan of Celia Tan after reading her Struck by Lightning series and when I saw she was writing a more upbeat type of story I didn’t hesitate. Taking The Lead is a rock-star romance that follows two very different people. Axel an emerging rock-star with a bright future, music is his passion and that’s all he is focused on. That’s until he meets Ricki Hamilton. As many rock-stars Axel has the reputation of being charming, enigmatic, talented and very sexy, and while he has been accumulating a reputation his reputation doesn’t necessarily precedes him. He may be a rock-star but he is loyal to a fault.
Ricki is sexy, beautiful, intelligent and very strict about her position as head of the sex club and her career, she is all about business. She doesn’t deviates from her responsibilities while at the same time making sure to stay away from the public & media scrutiny. She is focused on her career, fighting to gain a name and a place in a very male dominated world (movie production/filming) and while she struggles to get her name out there she also manages a sex club which she inherited from her grandparents. Between her struggles to make a name for herself and her struggles to keep unwanted publicity about her sex club Ricki has a lot to deal with.
Ricki & Axel meet and things between them happens quick, their attraction takes them both by surprised. The intensity of their encounter is something neither of them was expecting, Ricki never felt so alive and free, Axel made her body vibrate from excitement and passion. Axel is sure of his wants and needs, and he wants Ricki. As the story develops Ricki starts to fights her instincts and desires, trying to convince herself that whatever happened between her and Axel was a one time encounter. She struggles to admit that her needs are beyond those of sex, her nature as a submissive comes afloat and Axel feels compelled to dominating her.
While at times the Ricki shows promise in accepting her undeniable attraction and need for Axel she goes back and forth between accepting it and denying giving the readers a backlash of indecision. Axel on the other hand is quite sure of what he wants and he wants Ricki – he however understand that for Ricki things are more complicated and give hers the time she needs to come to terms with her feelings.
Overall, Taking The Lead is a sexy, sweet and at times endearing story. However, it can also be frustrating and repetitive making the reader question the character’s maturity. Since the story is told from a dual perspective, readers are able to get a pretty good idea of these characters struggles and fears. The author did a good job presenting Ricki’s emotions while also defining her need for exploration and submission.
