Knox of Iviland, the most ruthless warrior in All War history, has spent his life fighting others to the death, winning new realms for his king. Now the stakes are higher than ever. If he prevails in the battle for Earth, his slave bands will be removed. Victory is his sole focus…until he meets her.
On an arctic getaway with her foster sister, street tough but vulnerable Vale London is shocked to stumble upon a cave filled with ancient gods waging epic combat. When she is inadvertently drawn into their war, she is forced to team up with an unlikely ally—the sexy god who makes her burn with desire.
Though Vale is his enemy, Knox is consumed with lust and a fierce need to protect her. But only one combatant can triumph, and he will have to choose: live for freedom, or die for love.
Knox is a slave who is compelled to fight his king’s battles. Winning is all he has ever known and if he wins the current war he will be free, but he knows better than trust the promises of his vile king. As an immortal slave, Knox has known pain, loss and betrayal. He fights long battles, but while he has championed the wars he has fought his desire for freedom is as strong as his passion for winning. But there is something more powerful that keeps fueling him, that keeps driving him, and that’s his need for vengeance.
Vale has had her share of pain, loss, and heartbreak. From being abandoned by her father to losing the woman who she saw as a mother, Vale has experienced more pain than love. But that doesn’t deter her from pursuing her goals and working towards opening a business with her sister Nola. But her plans change when she is forced into a battle that could bring not just her end, but the end of humanity.
As Knox & Vale are brought together into an out of the world battle we get a first-row view of what drives these two characters. There is plenty of banter between them and the chemistry is off charts. I enjoyed Vale’s street-smart personality as well as the sweet and vulnerable side. Her wit, her drive and her ability to know when to push and when to pause are some of the things I like in her character. She knows when to show compassion, without showing weakness, she knows how to love without letting her emotions control her. She is the epitome of a likeable strong heroine.
Knox is everything one expects from an awesome hero, he understands his limitations and while he knows there is much at risk when it comes to Vale, he doesn’t dare let his lack of control get in the way of what he knows is the desired future with Vale. There is plenty of action, kick-ass fights and flat out sexy times that can melt your heart.
Shadow & Ice is exactly what one would expect from Gena Showalter. It is a fantastic read with great dialog, great setting, awesome characters, and a fantastic love story. I can’t wait for more.
