Clutch: a novel is the laugh-out-loud, chick lit romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc. With her best friend, bar owner Mike by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of Chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors and finds the courage to discover the “Clutch” or someone she wants to hold onto.
REVIEW: Have you ever read a book and felt a connection to it? As if the author was capable of capturing your thoughts and experiences? Clutch is the first book I read by Lisa Becker and it will not be the last. Clutch was short, but a great read.
The story is funny and the characters are quite relate-able. Caroline is a southern beauty, charming and a great friend to Mike. She is smart, beautiful and funny and a great catch, any man would be lucky to have her, but before she can find that guy she will have to kiss a few frogs.
Mike is charming, sexy and a womanizer. His charming personality as well as his looks are just some of the things that get women to flock around him, but Mike is not only hot, he is also smart and has an acumen for business. While studying for his business degree he meets Caroline, a southern beauty who charms him immediately. They become friends and the connection between them is instant.
The story develops slowly, but it flows at a great pace. Caroline becomes a handbag designer and Mike opens his own business, a bar. While these two are like any other friends, their connection is deeper than most, they can finish each other sentences and their banter is not only funny but also sweet. Caroline just wants to find that man that will just get her. That man who will swoon her, a man who would be able to share the good and bad times, a man who would be not just her lover but also her friend, a man who she can share her life. Becker does a great job developing Caroline and Mike relationship, from the little things such as sharing a lunch to the most heart felt situations like attending a funeral.
I enjoyed how the author managers to make this story funny while also very romantic. I like and how she hysterically manages to categorize Caroline’s love life into different styles of handbags. Utilizing each design and style to describe Caroline’s relationship to the men she dates. The writing is simple yet smart and detailed.
I think this is one of those stories that readers will enjoy, not only because it is nicely written but because most female readers will be able to relate. If you are looking for a sweet and sexy romance, then Clutch is for you. Expect to be laugh and be swoon by Mike. He is funny, smart and quite sexy. Caroline is beautiful, patient and has a heart of gold. Like Caroline, some of us have had to kiss a few frogs!
